Get Lowestoft Reading

Since March 2022, the Get Suffolk Reading programme has been actively working in Lowestoft with a passionate focus on improving literacy. By supporting children’s wellbeing and aspirations, and encouraging greater parental engagement, the programme aims to make reading for pleasure a part of everyday life in the community.

Get Suffolk Reading is community-driven, collaborating with local people and organisations to inspire a lasting love of reading. Over the past months, the team has delivered creative and fun projects that have engaged children and families across the town. To stay updated on their work, please follow them on Facebook. Their achievements so far have been made possible thanks to the generous support of local charities, businesses, creatives, and residents.

Leading this effort is project manager Sally Connick, who is eager to connect with more passionate Lowestoft locals. If you’re well-connected and committed to giving everyone in the town the best chance in life, the Lowestoft Ambassador Group is an ideal fit to champion literacy. This vital work spans all areas of community life - from sports and leisure, retail, arts and culture, to education, health, and the voluntary sector.

There are different ways to get involved as a Literacy Champion:

  • Light touch: Help spread the word by sharing information from newsletters or connecting the project with new people or groups across town.

  • Medium involvement: Assist with distributing thousands of free books, suggest project ideas, or support events by reading stories or handing out flyers.

  • More involved: Lead or develop new projects and activities that encourage literacy and reading for pleasure.

For more information about becoming a Literacy Champion, please read this document. Sally also offers a 30–40 minute training session, available online or in person, to support all Literacy Champions.

If you would like to help ensure every child in Lowestoft has easy access to books and the chance to enjoy reading, please sign up as a Literacy Champion today by completing the Lowestoft Literacy Champion Registration Form. After registering, you’ll be contacted about the training session.
